Surah Name: Al-Mujadalah Meaning: The Pleading

  • Revealed at Madinah
  • Mujadalah literally means obstinate insistence that persists not withstanding a refusal A Companion, Aus bin as Sarmat-RAU said to his wife Khola-RAU that she was like his mother to him. Such utterance in the era of Ignorance was considered to be severer than divorce as an option of reconciliation stayed open in divorce, but it was impossible in this case. Khola-RAU brought the dispute to the Holy Prophet-SW for resolution, who told her that Allah-SWT ’s decree was not available on this particular subject. She insisted and complained that if the Divine revelation addressed all other matters, why was it silent in her case? So Allah-SWT sent the revelation and rejected this tradition by declaring it to be a lie as well as a sin and commanded to adopt the proper way of divorce, where separation was desired.
  • Allah-SWT , the Almighty had heeded the lady's request, and remedied the banal ritual she was complaining about. She sought remedy commensurate to their situation, believing that Allah-SWT hears all cries for help and is a Witness to everything.

bismillah

Alam tara anna Allaha yaAAlamu ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi ma yakoonu min najwa thalathatin illa huwa rabiAAuhum wala khamsatin illa huwa sadisuhum wala adna min thalika wala akthara illa huwa maAAahum ayna ma kanoo thumma yunabbiohum bima AAamiloo yawma alqiyamati inna Allaha bikulli shayin AAaleemun

Have you-SAAW not seen that Allaah-SWT Knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth? There is no whispering among three but He-SWT is their fourth, nor among five but He-SWT is their sixth, nor fewer nor more, but He-SWT is with them wheresoever they may be. And thereafter He-SWT will declare to them, on the Day of Judgement what they have worked. Verily Allaah-SWT is the Knower of everything.

(58:7)

Alam tara ila allatheena nuhoo AAani alnnajwa thumma yaAAoodoona lima nuhoo AAanhu wayatanajawna bialithmi waalAAudwani wamaAAsiyati alrrasooli waitha jaooka hayyawka bima lam yuhayyika bihi Allahu wayaqooloona fee anfusihim lawla yuAAaththibuna Allahu bima naqoolu hasbuhum jahannamu yaslawnaha fabisa almaseeru

Have you-SAAW not seen those who were forbidden whispering, and they returned afterwards to what they had been forbidden? And they whisper among themselves of sin, and transgression and disobedience to the Messenger-SAAW. And when they come to you-SAAW, they do not greet you-SW with that with which Allaah-SWT greets you-SAAW, and say within themselves: Why does Allaah-SWT not punish us for what we utter? Sufficient unto them is Hell, wherein they will roast, a hapless destination!

(58:8)

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha tanajaytum fala tatanajaw bialithmi waalAAudwani wamaAAsiyati alrrasooli watanajaw bialbirri waalttaqwa waittaqoo Allaha allathee ilayhi tuhsharoona

O’ believers! When you whisper together, do not whisper of sin and transgression and disobedience to the Messenger-SAAW, but whisper for virtue and piety. And fear Allaah-SWT unto whom you will be gathered.

(58:9)

Innama alnnajwa mina alshshaytani liyahzuna allatheena amanoo walaysa bidarrihim shayan illa biithni Allahi waAAala Allahi falyatawakkali almuminoona

Whispering is only from Satan that he may grieve the believers; and he cannot harm them at all save with the leave of Allaah-SWT . So in Allaah-SWT let the faithful trust.

(58:10)

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha qeela lakum tafassahoo fee almajalisi faifsahoo yafsahi Allahu lakum waitha qeela onshuzoo faonshuzoo yarfaAAi Allahu allatheena amanoo minkum waallatheena ootoo alAAilma darajatin waAllahu bima taAAmaloona khabeerun

O’ believers! When it is said to you: Make room in your assemblies, then make room; Allaah-SWT will make room for you. And when it is said: rise up, then rise up': Allaah-SWT will exalt, in degree, those of you who believe and those who are endowed with knowledge; Allaah-SWT is Aware of whatsoever you work.

(58:11)

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha najaytumu alrrasoola faqaddimoo bayna yaday najwakum sadaqatan thalika khayrun lakum waatharu fain lam tajidoo fainna Allaha ghafoorun raheemun

O’ believers! When you come to the Messenger-SAAW for private consultation, offer alms before your whispering. That is better for you and purer. Then if you do not find the wherewithal, Allaah-SWT is Forgiving, Merciful.

(58:12)

Aashfaqtum an tuqaddimoo bayna yaday najwakum sadaqatin faith lam tafAAaloo wataba Allahu AAalaykum faaqeemoo alssalata waatoo alzzakata waateeAAoo Allaha warasoolahu waAllahu khabeerun bima taAAmaloona

Do you shrink at your spending something in charity before your whispering? Then, when you could not do it, and Allaah-SWT relented towards you, establish Salat and pay Zakat, and obey Allaah-SWT and His-SWT Messenger-SAAW. And Allaah-SWT is Aware of what you do.

(58:13)

In The Name of Allah-SWT the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful
SECRETS OF REVELATION:

Another Style of Opposition to the Holy Prophet-SAAW

To conspire against Muslims is a form of opposing the Holy Prophet-SAAW.The Jews started weaving furtive designs against Muslims when, bound by a peace treaty, they could not adopt overt means. Allaah-SWT declares that the Holy Prophet-SAAW fully knows and so should the others that Allaah-SWT observes all that goes on the earth and in the heavens. If three people plot secretly, He-SWT is the fourth present and listening. Or they may be five, or more or less; in any case Allaah-SWT personally knows and is present with every one. Wherever they may be, and even if they could not cause any harm to the Muslims and the Holy Prophet-SAAW they shall still be unable to escape Allaah-SWT ’s grip on the Day of Judgement. They would be accountable to Allaah-SWT for it as He-SWT is fully informed about all things.

The covert activities of infidels against Muslims continue to the present day, but they should not be intimidated, as Allaah-SWT is with them. Though the Holy Prophet-SAAW forbade them from insinuating conspiracies, yet the infidels grew more impudent. When they greeted the Holy Prophet-SAAW, instead of uttering the prescribed words Assalam-O- 'Alaikum (may you be safe and unharmed), they would disdainfully murmur Assam-O- 'Aalaikum, wherein saam means "death". They spoke quickly and quietly, to avoid a catch but the Holy Prophet-SAAW knew.

A Style of Politeness

Once Hadhrat 'Ayeshah SiddiqahRAU heard them say these words. She was enraged and retorted: Death unto you, and the curse and wrath of Allah-SWT be upon you. The Holy Prophet-SAAW advised her to stay calm and be gentle. She respectfully inquired whether he-SAAW had heard what they had wickedly said. He-SAAW replied that he had not only heard but had also answered them: 'Alaikum (same to you). Obviously, Allaah-SWT would grant His-SWT Prophet-SAAW‘s prayer and not that of the infidels.

Absolute Death

Consequently, they suffered absolute death, because they were not blessed with faith and died as infidels or hypocrites. The latter had blindly followed in the footsteps of the former, and together they rejoiced that no doom befell despite their extreme contempt. But in fact, the spiritual death is much severer than physiological death, and they are doomed to bum in Hell. That is the worst place with limitless tortures, a shadow whereof also casts over their worldly life and deprives them of peace of mind.

Muslims not to Adopt Infidels’ Ways

Muslims are commanded not to copy the infidels so as to secret consultations or whispering. However, if a secret such as matter of virtue, or checking oppression has to be communicated it must be done in a low voice, without a tint of sin or unfairness, nor it should be of disobedience to Holy Prophet-SAAW. The supremacy of Allah-SWT, Whom everyone has to ultimately return, must always be kept in mind.

How Conspiracy against Muslims Succeeds?

The whispering and sinister designs are the acts of Satan through which he attends to perturb Muslims, though he can cause no harm, for they are Allaah-SWT ’s bondmen. But when they annoy Him-SWT , these conspiracies damage them as His-SWT punishment. So they should obey Allaah-SWT and count only on His-SWT Help.

Secret of Prosperity

The believers have nothing to hide from each other. They should rather sit together and discuss collective benefits as a routine. And make room for new participants and if they have something important to say, those who have finished should depart. Or if the leader declares the meeting closed or asks some to leave, they must promptly comply. It would not only be administratively expedient but Allaah-SWT shall also elevate their stations in which their wisdom, for He-SWT over sees all that you do so the best way to progress in faith and participate is to help streamlining the administrative processes of an Islamic society.

When anyone wishes to meet the Holy Prophet in private, he should first give charity commensurate to his means. If, however, he cannot afford, Allaah-SWT is Forgiving and Merciful. Common-folk, out of simplicity, the Jews and the hypocrites deliberately indulged in pointless long conversations to waste his time as a nuisance. The command on charity cautioned the believers on one hand and stifled the non –believers on the other as they never wanted to spend on charity. Similarly the time of a spiritual mentor is also valuable and should not be wasted in long conversations. Whatever is said must be important, brief and to the point.

Hazrat Ali–RAU reports that it was only him who acted upon this Ayah and took appointment from the Holy Prophet-SAAW after paying charity. The command was soon revoked, so no one else could avail this opportunity.

Islam Facilitates Life

This Command was hard on Muslims, particularly the poor who felt embarrassed. As the aim was to check the miscreants, the order was revoked when its purpose was served, for Islam aims at convenience and not on hardship. So be earnest in worship and obey Allaah-SWT and His-SWT Prophet-SAAW in all walks of life. In other words, if mundane and eternal gain or loss depends on such an issue, how important are the obligatory worships and the administrative affairs of a Muslim society. Therefore, be resolute in carrying out both responsibilities to be amply rewarded by Allah-SWT, Who-SWT watches over all your actions.
